Progress!

Yesterday brought more progress in the hardwood flooring installation at the house.

I had to add a couple pictures of what my contribution was yesterday afternoon. I helped Jay install the last 4 rows in these two pictures. Ran had also come over in the morning to help Jay.

After I left, the real progress was made by Jay, Jake, Dan & Greg! Seriously, these guys are awesome...and a little crazy, but in a good way!

Here's where they got us as of 10:00pm last night (they stayed a couple more hours after I left):

They will finish what they can this afternoon/evening, which will probably consist of part of the long hallway and into the master bedroom. We ended up with quite a few "bad" cartons of wood flooring, with cracking in the coating. So, we have to wait until next week Wednesday to get the replacement cartons. We plan on finishing up the hallway, entry and master bedroom late next week & into the weekend.

In other news...today not only marks Val & Chris's 10th wedding anniversary, but it is also the one-year anniversary of us starting our blog. One year, 77 posts! :) A lot has happened and changed in the past year and we look forward to what the next year brings!

My parents fly in from their trip to Hawaii this morning. Then, they get to enjoy us and the beagles living in their house for the next 3-4 weeks - lucky them!!

Tomorrow we will head to GU for Mike & Sandy's 40th wedding anniversary party! Can't wait - it should be a great time! :)

Have a great weekend everyone! TGIF!

Flooring

Well the hardwood flooring installation in our house has officially begun as of last night. Jay and his crew (Jake, Dan and his boss, Lon) got a good start in the dining/living room areas last night. I managed to get some pictures of what they had done when we got there at about 11:00pm. They kept going and I think Jay didn't get home until 1:00am or later!

(Sorry there were spots on the lens of the camera so just bear with them).

Here they are:

So far, I think it looks fantastic! The guys have done a great job! It's a lot of work and we appreciate all the help.

I will post more photos as we progress...

Leaving

With all the time spent planning and fretting over the construction of our new house, one thing got lost in the shuffle...the day would come when we would have to move out of the trailer. At first glance, it seems rather matter-of-fact, a part of the process of moving. It is something we saw coming from a mile away.

We often talk about the downside of living at the trailer. There have been the crazy neighbors who drink and cause a raucus at all hours of the night and the crazy people that wander through the neighborhood. There is that darn train that blares its horn at all hours of the night, often waking us up several times. There are the people that walk by to get their mail and throw cigarette butts, empty cigarette packs and other various items into our lawn. There is the landlord, who, for whatever reason, had it out for us (in particular, for Jay) since Day 1.

Of course, to move into a new house, we knew we had to move out of the trailer. A part of the process that is assumed. An event we thought we would welcome with great anticipation.

Over the past twelve years, I have moved several times. The first time it really made me sad to move out of a place was after my sophomore year in college at the University of Mary. April 30th is my friend Bridget's birthday. I lived with Bridget and our friend Tara at an apartment at UMary that year. May 1 happened to be the date of my last final that year. Naturally, since Bridget's birthday was the night before, I provided transportation in order for her to celebrate. I did not sleep that night. I recall bringing Bridget and Tara home in the early morning hours and then staying up the rest of the night/morning studying for my last final. It was in Psychology, with the notorious Dr. Balough. I somehow pulled off a B- on that final, the toughest test thusfar in my young life.

The exam was in the morning. I came back to the apartment after the exam and Bridget and Tara had already moved out. There was our other roommate, Stacy, and a couple other women's softball players staying there through the month of May. I cleared out my room, the room I had shared with Bridget, and loaded up my car. I remember walking back to the room that we shared, and feeling that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I was leaving a place I had grown to love. I could spend hours telling stories from that year. It all comes rushing back when you look at that empty room. But then, you know you have to leave.

Over the course of the next decade, I left several other places. Every time I got that same feeling. The thought of never stepping foot inside a place where I lived, learned and loved just killed me, time and time again.

Then again, I have been known to be an emotional person.

The worst was at the end of the summer of 2000, moving out of our place on Riverside Road in Bismarck. During the school year I had lived there with Bridget and Angie. During the summer, I lived there with Heather. All three of them moved away. And not to places like Fargo or Minot. Bridget moved to Alaska. This just crushed me. She was the person I had confided to about everything. We even shared our personal journal entries with each other. And to Alaska!! Angie moved to Oregon. Not exactly the easiest place to visit either. Then, at the end of summer, Heather moved to Omaha. I can remember being the last to leave that apartment. Empty. All of the sudden you could hear every footstep and sound. If you talked, the sound echoed. Within a year, we had packed that place with a million valuable memories. Then, just like that, three of my closest friends, who had all lived there, were gone. On with life....

Today we finished moving everything out of the trailer and cleaning it. You never know what is going to catch you off guard. To us, it was the back door, the one the beagles learned to scratch every time they wanted out. Out of everything, it came down to that door.

As it turns out, the beagles got back in there to scratch and go through that door a few more times tonight. We had a few guests over for one last time. We sat on the floor and visited for an hour or so. Our guests left and it was just us and the dogs. It seemed so strange, to know we will never set foot in there again. That same feeling, at the pit of our stomachs.

Jay and I have taken very different routes in our life to get to each other. I moved around between different homes, cities, schools and jobs. Jay has been steady, and just recently marked his 13th year at the trailer and 11th at his job. Whatever you want to call it...fate, destiny, divine plan...brought our two paths together somehow. That trailer was meant to be our first home.

Jay has said that he does not associate me with the trailer. The fact is, he and I have been dating for almost 7 of those 13 years he was there. And, though most people do not know, I was at the trailer at least once before he and I were dating, when I was 20 years old. What I recall about that is the fooseball table in the kitchen, and Jay taking us there from their softball games in his Somerset. I was there before. Somehow, in my mind, that means something. To me, it has significance.

From that moment on, Jay was someone I could say I knew. Not necessarily a good friend, but someone who I always talked to whenever I saw him. I coached for several years at the 16th Street Diamonds (which are right by the trailer) and always got a wave from Jay when he would drive by on his way home for lunch. I just have to shake my head now. Little did I know where life would take me. Little did I know that someday I would marry him and live at that trailer with him. Sometimes I think it is best if we just don't know what life has in store for us.

I know Jay has a million more memories from that trailer than I do. And those memories will live on forever. But to take your last step out of a place where you have spent a good portion of your life is difficult, to say the least.

We did manage to take a couple pieces of the trailer with us. Jay cut a piece of the kitchen linoleum out along with some of the wood paneling trim. (Thanks to Lyndsey and Nick for those ideas). The beagles, of course, left several "pieces" of themselves (in other words, dog hairs) behind. We left when it was quiet, dark and peaceful.

I guess it just goes to show that a home does not have to be large, fancy, expensive or filled with all the latest updates and designer trends to be special. We are grateful for the time we were able to spend there. It was our cozy little shelter, our first home as a married couple.

We are transitioning at my parents' house while we wait for our new house to be completed. This is the place which I identify with most as my true "home." I know all the sounds and idiosyncracies of this house. I could probably find my way through it blindfolded of need be. I hope Jay will feel at home here, too.

After our 4-week transition period, we will be moving into our new house, a place which we will make our home for many years to come, God willing.

But for tonight, on the same date that Jay's parents celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and the same date that the last game is played at Yankee Stadium, we reflect on leaving our first home, and what that means to each of us.

You never really leave a place you love. Part of it you take with you, leaving part of yourself behind....

Cabinets

Here are some pictures of the cabinet bases that were installed over the past weekend in the two bathrooms. (They are cherry wood cabinets with a chestnut - reddish brown - stain).

I can't wait to see the rest of them installed along with everything else (flooring, countertops, etc). So far, I'm very impressed with how the cabinets look!

Of course, I'm getting impatient to see it ALL come together. (One month from today we should be in - yay!

Another busy couple of weeks...and things won't slow down for awhile!

Well yet again lots has happened since the last time I posted updates on the blog. And, as you can tell from the countdown on the right side of this page, we are rapidly approaching the date when we will close and get to move into our new house. I think it is starting to sink in that we will be moving out of the trailer. We have piles of boxes here right now. That is our project for next weekend - pack it all up and put it in the storage trailer for about a month.

Here are some pictures of the house from over the past few weeks:

Living room - as you can see the fireplace tile was installed. There will be a wood mantle around the fireplace and a matching wood ledge at the top of the bumpout so we can (ok, so I can) put decor up there). The Fesers, who are doing our cabinets, are also constructing the mantle and ledge to match.

As you can see from the pictures, they have also installed the door and window casings. I love the white - it make all the colors "pop." The baseboard trim will also be white.

Living room windows:
Laundry
Master Bedroom
Hallway niches - the bottoms of them will also be painted the darker color, but the painter hasn't completed that yet.
Looking from the living room toward the entry/hallway/2nd bedroom/den:
Dining room:
Entry way:
Master bathroom - as you can see, they installed the tub deck and whirlpool tub. Incidentally, the brand of the tub is JASON. I need to find something with "Sara" as the brand to equal that out somewhere in the house.
The exterior of the house as of Friday, 9-12-08. It's pretty much done now on the outside except the pillars will have a white casing and they have to install the coach lights. I love how the rock turned out with everything!
Close-up view of our front porch/patio area:
Little Grandma, Mom and Dad came out to see the house on Friday night with us after Dad's birthday party and decided to check out the front porch! :)
The cabinets in the bathrooms will go in this week and the painter will continue painting all the casings around the doors and windows and some other detail work. I think they might also install the flooring in laundry room and guest bathroom and the flooring and tile in the master bathroom, but don't quote me on that. I think the electricians will be in this week also.

Next week, Jay and a few of his buddies are going to install our hardwood floor in the living/kitchen dining rooms, the entryway/hallways and in the master bedroom.

That's basically the house update! Our "goal" is to close/move in on October 17, so just over a month and we'll be in our new home! :)

As you can tell by the title of this entry, we have had a busy, but good, couple of weeks. Here are some of the highlights:

Last weekend, I got a text from a friend that I went to law school with that he and his girlfriend were en route to a wedding in New Salem, of all places, and that he wanted to see if Jay & I would meet him out to have some supper and catch up. I bet I hadn't talked to him in almost a year. It was a nice surprise to hear from someone out of the blue. We did meet him out along with Jake and spent a few hours visiting and catching up.

Last week, we had Micaela's birthday party on Tuesday. As you know from my prior blog entry, she turned 13. I still can't believe that!

Here are a few pictures from the party:

Me with the birthday girl - my niece/goddaughter:
Thursday was our friend Trav's birthday so we met him out for awhile that evening, which was fun. I graduated high school with Trav so it's fun to reminisce about high school days. Trav is one of those friends that I kind of knew in high school but got to be good friends with later on in life. That has happened with a few people I knew in high school. It seems you get out of that high school environment and are able to get to know people better. At least that's my opinion!

Friday we had yet another birthday to celebrate - my dad's. (His actual birthday is Sept. 16). However, my parents took off to Hawaii for a couple week trip on Saturday morning so we had his party Friday evening before they left.

Here are a couple pictures of Dad ("Papa Ron") with the grandkids:

On Saturday, I got up bright and early to drop my parents off at the airport for their flight to Hawaii. Then, I came into work from 7:00am until about 11:30am - when I was rescued from working by Sandy and Lyndsey, who called about meeting them at the Street Fair, which is right out the front door to our office building. Val and the girls were already there so we all met up to have some lunch and to wander around to look at all the booths. We also stopped in a couple downtown stores and I bought a few things for the house at one of those stores. (Look out, house decor shopping has officially begun!) It was fun to do some shopping with Sandy and Lyndsey!

After that, I went over to watch Micaela's cross country meet. I have heard through my brother that she averaged about 8 minute miles which is awesome! That's better than I could do - I know that!!

Jay's softball team had a golf outing and fish fry on Saturday afternoon and well into the evening, which meant that the beagles and I ended up with a girl's night in. I ended up renting a "chick flick" ("Juno") which I had been wanting to see for quite some time. (Jay wasn't so keen on watching it). I thought it was really good - well worth it!

Sunday I got into work again for awhile and then took the beagles to the annual Shaggy Shuffle. This is the 3rd year I have participated in it. I love it - there are always tons of dogs around and it's just a fun atmosphere! Plus, it's for a good cause. I have to work on getting more donations in future years, but have been able to raise some money each year. It benefits the Central Dakota Humane Society, which is a no-kill non-profit animal shelter. My brother's family got their dog from CDHS.

Tom was able to join me for the walk. We're proud to say I think we came in with a strong 2nd & 3rd place finish with the 2-mile course. (Too bad we don't get medals - haha!) Tom took the "difficult" dog to walk - Jerz. She seemed determined to finish in the top 5, doing her usual pulling on the leash while walking. I had Bailey who is probably the easiest dog to walk, unless there is something or someone that makes her skiddish. Jerz also managed to dive into a big bowl of puppy treats which were sitting on the end of a table at one of the treat/water stations along the way. She has no shame! Oh well, we had the ladies who were at the table laughing over that!

Here are a few pictures from the event:

Jerz & Bailey pre-"race":
A picture of the crowd with all the dogs before the walk began:
Tom got a picture of me walking the dogs at the start:

After the walk, our volleyball team had a scrimmage scheduled, which was good practice for our season which starts on Wednesday of this week. Thanks to Robyn and her team and the others that came to scrimmage with/against us - we needed it! Our team got moved up a division after tying for first in league last year, so we need some good competition to get ready for the season!

Jay did dishes for possibly the 2nd to last time last night. I think out of anything about the new house, he is most excited about having a dishwasher!

We ended up "having" to sell the trailer to our landlord, who denied the application from the guy who was going to buy our trailer, that I had referred to in an earlier blog entry. While we were not happy with the way the landlord handled the whole situation, at least as of next Monday, the trailer will be sold for the same price. As I mentioned earlier we are packing/moving/cleaning throughout this entire upcoming weekend, so we can get out of there!

Jay has been in there for a long time, and while he is ready to move out, there are a lot of memories in there from all the years he has been there. But, it's time for us to move into a new home, our first house. I didn't know how excited I would be to move when the time came, or what emotions I would be feeling. I know I have been sad every time I've moved out of a place (which has been several places since I graduated high school). Sometimes, those memories just get me! In the 2+ years I have lived at the trailer, we have had some pretty fun times. We have gotten through some pretty tough times as well. I studied for the bar exam twice while living there. It's the only home Jerz has ever known and it's been the home in which Bailey got her chance at a better life (since she came from an abusive home before we adopted her from the pound). I know Jay has many more memories from there. I'm sure they will all come flooding back as we pack everything up this weekend and walk out of there for probably the last time. It has served it's purpose, and then some, over the years. If those walls could talk...

So it really is "bittersweet" - this whole moving process. I can say that I am really starting to get excited to begin making a whole new set of memories in our new home. Every time I go out there, it feels more and more like home to me.

I know this was a long post and I'm not sure when the next one will happen. Work and everything related to moving will be taking up a lot of time in the next couple weeks., so we will see!

Have a great week everyone!

Happy 13th Birthday Micaela!!

Wanted to wish Micaela a happy 13th birthday today! I cannot believe how fast time flies by! I was a senior in high school when Micaela was born...and Candace was teaching at St. Mary's at the time. I remember her flagging me down while I was walking over to Hillside Park with the freshmen class for Freshman Unity Day - yelling out the window of her car that she was going to the hospital! I also remember going up to the hospital after a football game that night and waiting for Micaela to arrive! I just cannot believe that was 13 years ago already!

Micaela, we hope you have a wonderful day and we will see you tonight at your party! And, as Papa Ron used to say to me and my friends - "Oh no - another teenager! Agh!"

A lot has happened in a week...

Hey there everyone...well unfortunately we are already at the end of the nice long weekend. Back to work tomorrow!!
The last week has been pretty eventful. Last Saturday night Jay got a text message from a friend telling him that someone was interested in buying the trailer. Sunday we went out on the river with Chris and Val and that day the guy who is interested in buying it called. He and Jay set up a time for him to come view it on Monday evening. So, Sunday & Monday evenings were spent furiously cleaning and organizing stuff at the trailer for when he came to view it. By Tuesday evening, he called Jay to tell him he's interested in buying it and was lining things up with his bank. So, without even listing it, we might have the trailer sold! There still is an inspection and some paperwork to take care of, but that would be a huge relief to have that taken care of before we move into our new home! (And if this falls through the trailer court manager said he would buy it at the same price - so either way I guess it's sold!) We have arranged to have a portable rental unit delivered to the trailer on Sept. 19 so we can move almost everything into that until we move into the house - they will pick it up, store it for a month or so and then deliver it to the new house. Well worth the money!
The rest of the week we were busy of course with work, etc. So, by the time Friday evening rolled around we were ready to kick back and watch a movie, which is what we did.
We did make it out to the house a couple times this past week as well and here are the newer pictures. The interior ones look like the ones from before except with the ceilings painted white. The exterior ones show the front porch and sidewalk concrete poured...

Thursday of last week I was able to make it to our nephew Gabe's first football game, which was so fun to watch! Gabe played well and his team won 7-6! Here are a few pictures from the game...
Good stance Gabe! (He's in the maroon playing defense):

After the game with (a proud) Dad:

Now, when Gabe plays in the NFL someday, we can say we were at his very first game! ;)

Back to the weekend....after kicking back by ourselves on Friday evening, we decided to hit the furniture stores around town for round 2 of shopping for a king size bed, bedroom set and dining room table. We think we have some selections narrowed down, now we just have to bite the bullet and get them ordered/purchased!

Saturday evening we went to a BBQ/house-warming party at Ryan & Raumi's house. We spent most of the evening there...and had another stray dog wander into our party. (Remember this episode from the weekend of the 4th of July). Unfortunately we were not able to locate the owner for this dog at Ryan & Raumi's but hopefully he made his way home safely. Jay's good friend Cody also was home this weekend and he and his brothers-in-law came to Ryan & Raumi's for awhile and then they came to the trailer to visit for a bit. Cody lived in the trailer with Jay a couple times over the years so knowing we are going to be moved out the next time he's home, he had to come over for one more evening.

Sunday I was pretty productive in the morning and then for the afternoon, we hit the river one more time with Chris & Val and the girls. Ryan, Raumi & Kelsen also came with as well as Mike & Carrie Gerving and the kids. It was a fun day, though really windy. After we spent the afternoon there, we went over to Chris & Val's for supper with everyone.

Today has been a rainy/stormy/dreary day. We haven't managed to get much done, although Jay has picked up the activity level by starting to pack up all the DVD's and VHS tapes we have. I will join him as soon as I get done blogging! :) We did meet Val & Brian and the kids out at our house to give them the first tour of it for awhile. Val was so thoughtful and brought some cake that she had made! (Delicious!) Thanks Val!

Well I suppose I better start helping Jay out a bit here...a shorter work week ahead which is nice. Starting Thursday evening, we are going to start installation of the hardwood floor we ordered. I guess the "crew" is going to consist of Jay, me, Dan & Jake. So.....if anyone else wants to join us and has any experience installing hardwood flooring....you are more than welcome!!

Have a great week everyone!!
